History in the Making

Wow! DePaul’s Game Advisory Board got together last Friday to discuss and critique our curriculum. It was an incredible two hour meeting. Our board members are some of the best minds in the game industry, and the leaders of the Chicago and national game development scene. At the meeting was Matt Booty, CEO of Midway Games; Nick Ehrlich, COO and Director of Project Management of Robomodo; Denny Thorley, CEO of Day 1 Studios; Dan Kaufman, Software Development Director of High Voltage Software; and Eugene Jarvis, Owner of Raw Thrills. Only Alex Seropian of Wideload Games was missing.
So, what did they tell us? Enough to write a book about. The industry is in the midst of enormous growth and exciting changes. The growth and always-changing nature of the industry make it hard to come up with a specific list of classes every game developer should take. A checklist approach to offering classes in game education just doesn’t seem like the right approach. Instead, the board is helping us shape our curriculum to educate well rounded students who can both get jobs now and also lead in the industry’s next generation.
Stop by and talk to one of the game development faculty if you’d like more information about what the board thinks of the industry, game education, or have any questions about our program.
